CHERRY HILL, N.J. - La Salle women's soccer graduate student
Melissa Sanger was one of three Explorers recognized at the 108th annual Philadelphia Sports Writers Dinner on Monday night at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill, N.J. Also honored with special recognitions were WNBA Coach of the Year Cheryl Reeve '88 and former football coach Bill Manlove, who was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame last summer.
Sanger finished the regular season with an unblemished 15-0-3 record in goal and only allowed six goals all during the regular season. The Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year, Sanger was also a first team all-conference and second team all-region selection. She graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in marketing and has a 4.0 GPA as a graduate student in the MBA program. Sanger was also named to the Capital One Academic All-District and Academic All-Atlantic 10 teams.
Reeve was named the WNBA Coach of the Year after guiding the Minnesota Lynx to the league title. She is a 1988 graduate of La Salle and four-year letterwinner under Speedy Morris and John Miller, earning all-MAAC and all-Big 5 honors.
Manlove was named head coach of the Explorers prior to the 1997 season, helping restore the program that had been dormant since 1941. He coached five seasons on 20th and Olney, finishing with a 16-14 record over his final three years. He guided La Salle to a school record seven victories in 2000.
