Box Score PHILADELPHIA – La Salle women's soccer clinches a share of the regular season Atlantic 10 title for the second straight year with a 1-0 double overtime victory over Saint Joseph's on Friday night.
The game-winning goal—scored by sophomore
Maryam Huseini in the 104
th minute—came off an
Anna Dolhansky assist and ended with a Huseini volley to the upper left corner from the top of the 18-yard box.
“It was a tremendous finish, at that time of the game,” said head coach
Paul Royal. “For Maryam to be composed enough to hit a side volley off the left side of her foot was fantastic.”
With the win, La Salle clinches a share of the regular season championship for the second straight season, after clinching the first title in program history in 2011.
“It's very special for not only the girls and the program, but for the university as well,” said Royal. “To know that we've been that team that everybody has been after and our girls still expect to win consistently day in and day out is tremendous.”
The Explorers (14-4-0/8-0-0) return to action against the Temple Owls (5-12-2/2-6-0) on Sunday. With a win, La Salle will claim sole possession of the regular season title.
“It's great to hear the girl's response that they're not satisfied yet and they want to lock up sole possession on Sunday,” said Royal. “You can't ask for much more than that.”
