KINGSTON, R.I. - La Salle closed out the game with a 7-0 run to erase a three-point deficit and escape Rhode Island with a 49-45 win at the Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I., on Saturday afternoon.
Ruvanna Campbell finished the game with three blocks, the second of which broke La Salle's all-time single season freshman blocks record of 36 set by Suzi McCaffrey in 1982-83. She now ranks fourth all-time overall.
Alexis Scott led all scorers with 21 points and contributed four rebounds.
Brittany Wilson added 11 points, all in the second half, for the Explorers (12-13, 6-4 Atlantic 10).
Corinne Coia led Rhode Island (1-24, 0-10 Atlantic 10) with 13 points and a team-high-tying five rebounds.
The Explorers rattled off the game's first 11 points, holding the Rams scoreless until the 14:47 mark. A Scott jumper at 13:50 put the Explorer lead back at 11, but the home squad slowly chipped away at those 11 points to eventually tie the game at 18-18 on a Coia layup with 3:23 in the first half. Scott countered with a trey at 2:42 and neither team scored for nearly two minutes until URI's Megan Straumann tied the game on a triple with 54 seconds remaining in the half.
Scott broke a halftime tie with a three at the 19:12 mark of the second half, but URI stayed in the game as the team's traded leads until the Explorers stayed on top for good with just 2:12 left in the game. The second half featured six ties and 13 lead changes.
The Rams held a 45-42 edge with 3:07 on the clock before two Wilson free throws brought the Explorers within one at 2:49. Scott nailed two more free throws at 2:12 to tie and take the final lead. She hit one of two with 25 seconds left to give the Explorers a two-point cushion before Wilson closed out the final 7-0 run with two freebies with seven seconds left. The Rams were unable to get off another shot before the buzzer sounded.
Both teams struggled to make baskets as both shot under 40 percent. The Rams shot 37.2 percent (16-of-43) to the Explorers' 31.3 percent (15-of-48), but the Explorers made seven threes to the Rams' three treys. The Explorers also hit 12-of-14 free throws.
The Explorers return home on Wednesday (2/15) as they host Dayton at 7 p.m. in Tom Gola Arena. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in honor of the annual Pink Out game to benefit breast cancer awareness.
