Women's Basketball Cruises Past GW, 69-47

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A 16-0 run spanning nearly seven minutes in the first half was the difference as La Salle cruised past George Washington, 69-47, at the Charles E. Smith Center on Wednesday night.

Brittany Wilson led all scorers with 23 points, including a perfect 7-for-7 at the free throw line, while also pulling down a game-high-tying eight rebounds and dishing out a game-high six assists. Jada Payne added 13 points and Jordan Mosley chipped in 12 for the Explorers (13-15, 7-6 Atlantic 10).

Tiana Myers led the Colonials (11-16, 4-9 Atlantic 10) with 15 points and Tara Booker added 12 points along with a team-best seven rebounds and game-high four blocks.

La Salle controlled the tip and Wilson scored her first bucket on an offensive rebound on the first possession, but the Colonials rattled off eight straight points thanks to six Explorer miscues to take an 8-2 lead into the first media timeout.

However, a 16-0 Explorer run sparked by a Wilson trey at 15:30 put La Salle up 18-8 at the 10:41 mark. La Salle held GW without a point from 16:15 until a Chakecia Miller free throw at 9:07, and held the Colonials without a field goal until the 7:54 point.

The Explorers pushed the lead to as many as 13 in the first half, moving to 34-21 on a Payne three-pointer at the one-minute mark before taking a 34-23 lead into the break. Wilson scored the team's first six points of the second half, pushing the Explorer lead to 15 at 40-25 with 18:37 on the clock. However, the Colonials were not out of steam yet, going on a 9-2 lead to get within eight with 12:39 on the clock.

That was the closest the home squad got the rest of the way as a Ruvanna Campbell layup at 11:57 pushed the Explorer lead back to double digits for good. A 16-6 Explorer run pushed the lead to 22 at 60-38 at the 4:28 mark and cruised down the stretch to the final 69-47 score.

The Explorers shot 40.0 percent for the game, including 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from three-point territory. The Blue & Gold also converted 13-of-14 free throws, the first time that the squad shot over 90 percent at the charity stripe since a 14-for-15 showing at Rhode Island on Feb. 20, 2010.

The squad limited the Colonials to 31.7 percent from the field and just 23.1 percent from beyond the arc, including just 2-of-11 in the second half. The Explorer bench dominated, outscoring the Colonial bench 36-7.

La Salle wraps up regular season play on Saturday (2/25) when the Explorers host Temple in an Atlantic 10 and Big 5 matchup at Tom Gola Arena at 1 p.m. The team's seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
