Alicia Aughton Tabbed Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week

PHILADELPHIA - La Salle's freshman pitcher Alicia Aughton was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for her outstanding play at Coastal Carolina's Chanticleer Showdown this past weekend.

She is also La Salle's Student-Athlete of the Week.

Aughton went 2-1 in the circle for the Explorers, recording her first two collegiate wins. That included a complete-game two-hitter in a 1-0 upset on Sunday of host Coastal Carolina, which had come into the contest with a 20-4 record. She put together three complete games while striking out 13, and recorded a 1.84 ERA in the tournament in five appearances and three starts. Aughton is currently the team leader in ERA with a 2.53 on the season.

In addition to her pitching prowess, Aughton helped herself at the plate, leading the team with a .455 average on the weekend including a .474 in tournament play. She had three multi-hit games, including a 3-for-4 outing with one RBI and one run scored in a 6-4 loss to Hampton on Friday. She blasted her first collegiate home run in a 5-4 loss in the second game against Hampton on Saturday. Aughton is now tied with fellow rookie Alyssa Bitsimis for the team lead in batting average with a .333.

"I'm very excited for Alicia being honored as rookie of the week," Head Coach Brianne Brown said. "She had a commanding presence on the mound throughout the week and was a threat at the plate every at bat. I'm very proud of her performance and looking forward to her development over the course of the season."

Aughton and the rest of the Explorers return to action on Friday (3/16) when they travel to Delaware for the Blue Hens' Spring Invitational, with four games over the weekend. The squad is set for its home opener next Tuesday (3/20) when the Explorers host Villanova for a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
