AMBLER, Pa. - The La Salle softball squad mounted a three-run one-out rally in the top of the seventh in game one of an Atlantic 10 doubleheader, but fell just shy in a tough 4-3 loss at Temple on Friday. The Explorers fell 8-0 in five innings in the second game.
Liz Reed led the La Salle offense with a 3-for-4 outing at the plate, including two RBI in that rally.
Temple got on the board in the first inning of game one with an unearned run driven in by Rachel Knable. The next three innings were quick on both sides of the field before the Owls exploded for three more in the fifth on a Brooklin White three-run home run.
Breanna DiTommaso blasted a one-out double in the sixth to break up White's no-hit bid.
The Explorer bats came alive in the seventh. After
Kati Cooper drew a leadoff walk,
Tristan Musho hit a single up the middle.
Alyssa Bitsimis loaded the bases by drawing the inning's second walk. Reed then delivered a two-run single and then crossed home plate herself on
Kristin Travers' pinch hit double to left center for the third run. The Owls then recorded a strikeout and got a fly out to end the Explorer hopes in a 4-3 decision.
Alicia Aughton went the distance in the circle, yielding four runs on 11 hits and striking out four. White earned the decision for the Owls, giving up three runs on four hits, striking out six and walking four.
The nightcap was all Temple, as the Owls picked up three runs in the first on a Sarah Prezioso RBI single and Knable two-run single. Samantha Schoell hit a two-run double in the second and scored on a Prezioso single to put the home squad up 6-0.
Kayla Cook hit a solo shot in the third and Ali Robinson scored an unearned run on a Prezioso single in the fourth for the eighth run.
The Explorers had several chances in the second inning as three runners advanced to third base, but two fielder's choices kept the squad off the board.
Travers got the start, but lasted just one inning and took the loss. She gave up three runs on two hits. Aughton pitched the remainder of the game, giving up five runs on six hits and striking out two.
The Explorers return to action on Sunday when they travel to Saint Joseph's for a doubleheader starting at noon.
