CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - The La Salle golf team will compete for the conference title when the Atlantic 10 Championship tees off on Friday at 7:30 AM from Heron Bay Golf Club.
The Explorers head into the three-day, 54-hole event with its deepest and most consistent roster in recent memory. The 2011-12 season had plenty of highlights, including the Blue and Gold winning the Immaculata Fall Invitational, and hosting and finishing third at the La Salle Spring Invitational at Talamore CC.
Sophomore
Mike Johnson has been the top Explorer all season with a 75.3 stroke average. He has four top five finishes in nine events and shot a season and career low of 68 at the GW Intercollegiate. The Ambler, Pa. native is coming off a fine showing at the Navy Invitational last weekend, where he placed fifth with a 74-75=149 (+7).
A pair of seniors,
Ed Carnes and
Randy Kurzinsky, will be looking to end their careers with a bang. Kurzinsky averaged 77.2 strokes per round this season. He shot a pair of 72s in 2011-12, including one in the first round at Navy last weekend.
Carnes, also an outstanding swimmer for the Explorers, averaged 77.9 strokes per round this spring. He tied for 12th at Lafayette earlier this month and will look to improve upon his 36th place showing at last year's A-10 Championship.
Sophomore transfer
Tyler Fewell has been a welcome addition to the team this year. He has averaged 78.3 strokes per round and tied for second at Immaculata with a 72-73=145 (+5). At last year's conference championship while a freshman at Washington and Jefferson, Fewell finished second to earn all-conference honors with a 72-77=149 (+7).
Rounding out the lineup is freshman
Greg Goodreds. He averaged 81.6 strokes per round in a consistent season. His season low of 76 came in the first tournament of the spring at the GW Intercollegiate.
