CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – The La Salle golf team shot the fourth best score of the day (289) to move up two spaces to seventh at the second day of the Atlantic 10 Championship at Heron Bay Golf Club. Sophomore
Mike Johnson shot his second straight 71 (-1) and is tied for seventh with a two-under 142.
La Salle's team score of 289 was just one over par, the best score by an Explorer team at A-10s and a season low. It was also the lowest team score during head coach Sal Caimano's tenure.
“It was an awesome team effort today,” Caimano said. “We have a great group of young men, the best I've ever coached.”
Johnson is four shots off the pace and for the second straight day, recorded the best score by an Explorer at the Atlantic 10 Championship. He birdied the first two holes for the second straight day and finished the front nine one under par. Johnson opened the back nine with two straight birdies and completed the back nine in even par.
Also tying the best round by an Explorer was senior
Randy Kurzinsky, who also shot a career-low 71 (-1). Kurzinsky was two-under on the front nine with three birdies and was one-over on the back for his 71. Combined with his 73 (+1) on Friday, Kurzinsky is tied for 11
th with an even-par 144.
Senior
Ed Carnes also shot a collegiate low with his even-par 72. Carnes had four birdies during today's round and has played outstanding other than three double-bogeys. Except for those three holes, Carnes is three-under. As it stands, the two-sport standout is tied for 23
rd with a 75-72=147 (+3).
Freshman
Greg Goodreds shot a collegiate low 75 (+3), moving up to 49
th in the individual standings. The rookie was even par on the back nine.
Sophomore
Tyler Fewell rounded out the lineup with a 76 (+4). He is tied with Goodreds at 49
th.
George Washington (568) maintains the lead by two strokes over six-time defending champion Charlotte and Xavier. Charlotte's Raoul Menard shot a four-under 68 on Saturday and leads the tournament with a six-under 138.
