ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Severe weather kept the 15-team field competing at the Navy Fall Classic in Annapolis from completing the first round on Saturday, as golfers were pulled from the course after a tornado warning was issued followed by torrential rainfall which left the course unplayable. Fifteen golfers were unable to complete play with just one hole remaining. Play will continue on Sunday morning at 9:00 am with the completion of the first round, followed by 18 holes of play en route to crowning the 2012 winner of the Navy Fall Classic.
Of the teams to successfully complete play, North Dakota State leads at 279 (-5), followed by Saint Francis (Pa.) at 288 (+4) and St. Bonaventure at 290 (+6).
The La Salle squad was able to complete all 18 holes before the course was cleared, posting a score of 304 (+20). Freshman P.J. Acierno started his collegiate career on the right foot, firing a team-low 72 (+1).
“It was great to start my collegiate career out on a solid round,” Acierno said. “I was happy with how I hit the ball and was able to recover from some of the mistakes I made.”
Mike Johnson finished 3 strokes behind Acierno, carding a 75 (+4).
Tyler Fewell,
Greg Goodreds, and
Justin Smith posted scores of 78 (+7), 79 (+8), and 83 (+12), respectively.
"It's nice to get support from the younger members," Johnson said. "[Acierno] played well and has a lot of potential to get better."
Expect low scores from the field tomorrow as the severe weather gives way to abundant sunshine and calm wind.
