Neither team found the back of the cage early on, but Shoemaker broke through in the 23rd minute for the game winner. Barretta rocketed in a shot that was saved and Shoemaker picked up the rebound and drained it to put the Explorers up 1-0.
Papa gave the Explorers a 2-0 cushion in the 32nd minute. With the two teams tangled in front of the cage, Barretta picked up the ball and fed Papa for the score.
Papa scored again just three minutes later, this time off of a pass from Carfagno, to give the Explorers a 3-0 halftime lead.
The Billikens cut the lead to 3-1 just over five minutes into the second half when Faith Mackin took a pass from Jami Alexander and took a long shot into the cage.
SLU never threatened again after that. The Explorers were awarded a penalty stroke at the 50:24 mark, which Barretta successfully converted. The Explorers were lights out from there, rattling off three more goals in the next 10 minutes.
Tettelbach sent in a penalty corner to Shoemaker in the 54th minute, who rocketed the ball into the right side of the cage to go up 5-1. Less than two minutes later, defender Deaner tipped in a Barretta shot for her first collegiate goal. Tettelbach once again connected to Shoemaker in the 62nd minute, who was awarded the goal after a conference of the officials.
SLU's Megan Rogers got one back in the 66th minute, draining a penalty corner pass from Jenell Murphy.
The Explorers outshot the Billikens 26-9 and held a 10-2 advantage on penalty corners.
Shaffer made five saves on the day in the win. SLU's Tori Westhead took the loss, stopping six shots. Megan Depew-Brady played the final 16:16, stopping three shots.
The Explorers head on the road for the final two games of the regular season, visiting Richmond on Friday (11/1) at 3:30 pm and VCU on Sunday (11/3) at noon.
