PHILADELPHIA - Seniors
Ebonee Jones and
Shanel Harrison combined for 36 points to lead La Salle women's basketball in a 73-56 loss to Charlotte on Senior Day on Sunday at Tom Gola Arena.
The Explorers honored their four seniors in a ceremony prior to tipoff, including Jones, Harrison,
Brittany Wilson and
Nikki Ortiz.
Jones led the Explorers (8-19, 4-8 Atlantic 10) with 20 points, two shy of her career best, and Harrison added 16 along with a team-best six rebounds.
Indigo Dickens went 3-for-3 from the field and tied a career best with seven points.
Jennifer Hailey led the 49ers (22-4, 11-1 Atlantic 10). with career highs in points (27) and rebounds (18). Jai Forney added 10 points and Amanda Dowe chipped in nine points and nine rebounds to help the visiting squad extend their winning streak to 11.
La Salle ran out to a 10-4 lead less than two minutes into the contest, forcing an early Charlotte timeout. The 49ers mounted a 6-0 run out of the timeout before a Harrison jumper broke the visitors' momentum. The score was tied twice more, the last tie at 16-16 when the 49ers then put together another run, this time a 9-0 spurt.
Charlotte led by as many as 11 at 34-23 with 3:44 until halftime, but La Salle closed out the first half on a 9-1 run to get within three at the half and trailing just 35-32. The Explorers held the 49ers without a field goal in the final 4:02 of the half.
The 49ers scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 42-32 lead but the Explorers stayed within striking distance.
Siobhan Beslow sank a basket at 15:18 to pull the Explorers within 44-38, but the 49ers responded with a 13-2 run to take a 17-point lead and would never relinquish the double-digit lead down the stretch.
Charlotte was hot from the field, shooting 50 percent from the field, but struggled at the free throw line by going just 11-for-20. The 49ers dominated the paint, scoring 48 of their points under the basket. La Salle shot 33.3 percent from the field and went 15-for-17 from the charity stripe.
La Salle limited one of the best rebounding teams in the conference, as Charlotte held just a slim 38-37 advantage on the boards.
The Explorers close out the home portion of their schedule on Wednesday (2/27) when they host Duquesne at 7 p.m.
