Ebonee Jones Drains 21 Points In 74-57 Loss To George Washington

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Ebonee Jones drained 21 points for the second time in three games to lead the La Salle women's basketball squad in a 74-57 loss to George Washington at Tom Gola Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Jones went 8-for 21 from the field, added a perfect 5-for-5 showing at the free throw line, and recorded a team-best four assists and three steals in 39 minutes of play. Shanel Harrison added 12 points and a team-best eight rebounds, and Jordan Mosley chipped in 10 points. Karynda DuPree chipped in seven rebounds and a game-best four blocked shots, in addition to eight points.

Tara Booker led five Colonials (9-12, 3-4 Atlantic 10) in double figures with 13 points, thanks to three second-half treys. Shi-Heria Shipp added 12 and Danni Jackson, Chakecia Miller and Sara Mostafa scored 11 points apiece. Jackson and Miller tied for game high honors with seven assists each.

Jones scored the first seven Explorer points to take a 7-4 lead at 14:17, before the teams traded baskets and leads for most of the remainder of the first half. La Salle's last lead came at 19-18 on a Harrison layup before Miller hit a jumper to spark GW's 7-0 run to take a 25-19 lead at 1:44. Harrison closed out the first half with a jumper with four seconds on the clock to close the gap to 25-21.

The second half was much of the same story with the squads trading baskets. Siobhan Beslow opened scoring in the second half, but Jackson responded for the Colonials. DuPree and Harrison put together back-to-back baskets to knot the game at 27-27 at 17:48, but a free throw by Mostafa at 17:21 gave the visitors the lead for good.

The Explorers (7-14, 3-3 Atlantic 10) remained close, getting within three as late as 10:15 when Mosley drained two free throws. However, back-to-back Booker treys sparked a 13-0 GW run in less than three minutes to give the Colonials a 53-37 lead at 7:51.

Jones broke up the run with a layup at 7:36, but GW pushed the lead to 21 on four different occasions to hold on for the 74-57 final score.

The Explorers went 32.8 percent from the floor, and struggled from long range, hitting just 2-of-14. A bright spot was free throw shooting, as the team went a perfect 11-for-11 from the charity stripe. The last time the team hit at least 90 percent was at George Washington last season, when they went 13-for-14. They also edged the Colonials on turnovers, committing 15 to the visitors' 17.

GW went 47.5 percent from the floor, including 4-of-6 from downtown. The Colonials edged the Explorers on boards 41-37.

The Explorers were shorthanded on Sunday, with Brittany Wilson, Jess Koci and Michea Bryant sidelined due to injury.

The Explorers remain at home on Wednesday, hosting a red-hot Fordham squad at Tom Gola Arena at 7 p.m.
