Men's Tennis Prepares for Spring Season at Loyola

PHILADELPHA – The La Salle men's tennis team will kick off the remainder of their spring season on Saturday at Loyola (MD). The Explorers started their spring campaign with a 6-1 loss at NJIT.

The Explorers look to build off a strong fall season that included six wins and three losses.

“The fall season was a big boost of confidence for our guys. Now it is important to make sure that we continue to keep the same mentality we ended with on October 14th,” said head coach Ed Colfer.

The spring season includes 13 matches, including three against city rivals, Temple, Saint Joseph's, and Villanova. The first match against city opponents is on April 4th home against the Owls at the Belfield Courts.

“It is always fun to play against Big 5 rivals, especially Temple and Saint Joe's” junior Chas Berenato said prior to the season.

Berenato finished the fall season with a 5-5 record, before he dropped the first match against NJIT.

The Explorers finish their spring season against Northern Kentucky at a neutral sight in New Jersey on April 20th. The match will take place at Edison Park in Edison, NJ as a part of the National Invitation Tennis Tournament. The tournament is being hosted by NJIT, but the Explorers will only participate in one match against the Norse.

“Throughout the fall and spring we mostly play local teams or teams in our conference, so it is finally nice to play a team like Northern Kentucky, who we never get to see” Colfer said.

Senior Trevor Donovan described the offseason training as “a good way to keep on top of things during the long layoff between matches.”

Donovan notched an 8-4 record in singles play during the fall campaign. He teamed up with sophomore De'Sean Fennell in doubles to earn a 6-3 record.

Fennell looks to improve on his 7-3 fall singles record.

After the match against Northern Kentucky, the Explorers will participate in the Atlantic 10 Championships in Mason, Ohio from April 25-27.
