ORLANDO, Fla. - The La Salle University men's tennis team saw its season come to a close on Thursday afternoon in a hard-fought, 4-1 loss to Fordham in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championships.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Explorers started things off with an exciting doubles competition, with freshman Dylan Tull and sophomore Brandon Caban teaming to take a 6-1 victory at No. 3.
- Fordham responded with a win at No. 2, setting the stage for a back-and-forth battle at the top spot.
- Seniors Rogelio Gonzalez and Connor Merrill fought back from an early deficit to defeat Fabian Mauritzson and Lutwin De Macar, 7-5, and give La Salle an early 1-0 lead.
- With the early lead, La Salle looked primed for a second straight upset win at A-10's. In 2019, the Explorers became the first team to ever pull off a win as the 11th seed with a victory over George Mason.
- On a hot day at the United States Tennis Association's National Campus, the Explorers battled in all six of their singles matches.
- Caban earned a 6-4 win in the first set of his match at No. 5, and Gonzalez was up a break in the second set of his matchup with Mauritzson.
- In the end, the Rams proved to be too tough and picked up straight-set wins at Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 6 to advance to the quarterfinal round.
