PHILADELPHIA – The Explorers' softball squad split today's doubleheader against Temple, winning the first game 5-0 and falling in the second 11-1. Sophomore
Alicia Aughton threw a complete game shutout and allowed just five hits on the day, improving to 7-3 in the circle.
After three scoreless innings of play, the Explorers struck first on a single to center field by freshman
Kendra Heyer to score fellow freshman Ali Waddington. On the next play and with the bases loaded, junior
Megan Hodgson ripped a grand slam over the right field wall to send the Explorers ahead 5-0. The back-to-back plays constituted the only runs of the game for either team.
Hodgson and freshman
Paige Giunta each batted 2-3 while Heyer batted .750 with three singles.
Explorer bats went cold for the second game of the day as Temple caught fire, scoring in every inning except the third. Freshman
Mary Cate Scott got the start for the Explorers but could not fend off the determined Owls who scored four runs in both the second and fifth innings.
Aughton provided the lone run for La Salle off a deep solo shot to right center. That was Aughton's second homerun on the season which places her second on the team behind Hodgson who now has three.
The Explorers return to action tomorrow against St. Joe's for another doubleheader and conference matchup starting at noon.
