Field Hockey Returns To Philly For Two Weekend Games

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle field hockey team returns to the City of Brotherly Love this weekend when the Explorers take on a pair of NorPac teams. The Explorers will play Pacific in a designated home game at Drexel University at 3 p.m. Friday before returning to the friendly confines of DeVincent Field on Sunday for a contest against Liberty at noon.

Sunday's game against the Flames will be video streamed live on La Salle's video portal.

Scouting the Explorers

The Explorers look to bounce back from a pair of losses last weekend. However, the Explorers' offense turned on last weekend as the squad found the back of the cage six times in its two games at Sacred Heart and Fairfield. Senior Olivia Shoemaker drained two goals and assisted on one other to bring her season total to 10 points on four goals and two assists. Classmate Mariel Papa also brought her season total to 10 points as she scored one goal and recorded two assists on the weekend. Their points tie them for third in the Atlantic 10 in that category. Maddy Tettelbach scored one and assisted one, while freshmen Abbey Lawrence and Devin Muracco each scored goals. Tettelbach is tied for sixth in the A-10 in points with seven on the season.

Defensively, the Explorers lead the Atlantic 10 with six defensive saves this season and are second in the league in saves per game. Junior Olivia Leaman is tied for first nationally with four of those defensive stops, and keeper Lisa Shaffer leads the A-10 and is sixth nationally in saves per game (9.50).

Scouting the Tigers

Pacific remains in search of its first win in its four-game trip to Philadelphia this weekend. The Tigers opened the weekend on Thursday afternoon at Saint Joseph's, and will also play St. Francis (Pa.) and Penn while on the East Coast. They dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 20 New Hampshire on Sunday, Sept. 8, before an 11-day break. Five different players have scored Pacific's five goals this season. However, the Tigers returned their top two scorers and three of the top five from last season. Melissa Maultsby and Paige Counsman co-led the squad with seven goals apiece in 2012.

Sophomore keeper Molly Macierz has handled the majority of duties in net, recording a 3.74 goals against average and .550 save percentage. Classmate Maggie Corder has seen some significant minutes as well, and she is recording a 4.82 goals against average and .500 save percentage.

Scouting the Flames

Liberty enters the weekend with a 3-2 record before playing at Monmouth on Friday. The Flames split a pair of games last weekend, falling 3-2 to No. 18 Wake Forest and getting past VCU, 5-2. The Flames have not had a home contest since the season opener on August 30th, and Sunday's game marks the sixth straight road game for the squad. Natalie Barr leads the squad with 10 points on three goals and four assists. Ashlee Krulock is the goals leader with four, while Hannah Jones has added three goals and three assists.

Keeper Ann Jefferis, high school teammate of Explorers Olivia Shoemaker and Taylor Yoder, is sporting a 1.80 goals against average and a .750 save percentage heading into the weekend.
