Papa Scores Two Goals, Offense Comes Alive In Field Hockey's 4-2 Win Over Lehigh

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - La Salle senior Mariel Papa drained two goals as the Explorers field hockey squad held on for a 4-2 win over Lehigh in nonconference action on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Explorers are a perfect 3-0 at DeVincent Field so far this season.

Olivia Shoemaker and Maddy Tettelbach also scored a goal each for the Explorers (3-7).

Lehigh's Marissa Glatt scored both Mountain Hawk goals.

Shoemaker drew first blood just 1:46 into the contest, sending a shot into the left side of the cage to put the Explorers up 1-0.

The score remained at 1-0 for the next half hour until Tettelbach drained an unassisted shot high into the left side of the cage to put the Explorers up 2-0 heading into the break.

Papa put the Blue & Gold up 3-0 shortly into the second half. Juliana Carfagno sent a pass across the front of the cage which found Papa in the left corner, and she sent it home for what proved to be the deciding goal.

Lehigh's Glatt was awarded a penalty stroke at the 43:04 mark, but La Salle keeper Lisa Shaffer came up with a beautiful save to keep the Mountain Hawks off the board. Unfortunately, Glatt struck again twice in decisive fashion, draining back-to-back goals at the 48th and 53rd minutes to cut the Lehigh deficit to 3-2.

Papa gave the Explorers some breathing space just over three minutes later with her second goal of the game. Kempf took a shot that was saved by Lehigh keeper Sydney Maltinsky, but Papa picked up the rebound and one-timed it into the cage to put the squad up 4-2 for the eventual final score.

"I definitely think it was an overall team effort, I think we did a nice job of coming out ready to play and converting early to set the tempo of the game," Head Coach Michelle Marks said. "We did a nice job of pressing them inside of their defensive 25 and coming up with key plays both on attack and defensively. Lisa [Shaffer] did an outstanding job, she turned away a lot of opportunities that Lehigh had, and Mariel [Papa] did a great job obviously [with] two goals today."

Shaffer turned away 10 shots in the win, including the penalty stroke. Julia Ward started in goal for Lehigh, making six saves in the first period while giving up two goals. Maltinsky took over after the break, recording one save while giving up two goals.

Lehigh held a 12-6 advantage on penalty corners and a 21-16 edge on shots.

The Explorers head back on the road next weekend for the final two nonconference games of the season. They play at Bryant on Friday (10/4) at 7 p.m. followed by a contest at Northeastern on Sunday (10/6) at 1p.m.
