All-Time Series
Wednesday night marks just the second-ever meeting of the Explorers and Rams. VCU won last year's inaugural meeting in Richmond, 69-50.
Scouting the Explorers
The Explorers have now won four of their last five games, including a 2-0 start in Atlantic 10 play after outlasting Rhode Island 50-44 in overtime and running past George Mason 65-50 on the road.
Leeza Burdgess, who averaged a double-double of 13.0 ppg and 13.3 rpg last week, was named the Big 5 Player of the Week. Burdgess's game has been coming together, as the 6'4 center has recorded three double-doubles in the last four games. She set a new career high with 19 rebounds against Binghamton and tied her previous career high with 16 at George Mason.
Micahya Owens leads a trio of players averaging double figures, with her 13.4 ppg. Owens has hit double figures in all but three games in her rookie season and averaged 15.5 ppg in the two A-10 games so far.
Alicia Cropper is contributing 11.7 ppg, and tied her career high with 17 last week against Binghamton. She also set a new career mark in rebounding, hitting the 10-rebound mark for the first time in the Explorers' win over Rhode Island.
Khristin Lee rounds out the top three scorers, chipping in 10.4 ppg and dishing out 2.8 assists.
Burdgess leads the squad in rebounding with 7.6 rpg, while chipping in 8.9 ppg.
The Explorers are averaging 59.2 ppg as a team, and rank third in the Atlantic 10 by holding opponents to a scant 60.5 ppg.
Scouting the Rams
VCU has put together a remarkable season so far, going 14-1 along with a 2-0 start in A-10 play. The Rams' lone loss of the season was to Ohio State back in early November.
This high-scoring squad drains 82.9 ppg and is averaging over 90 ppg in its two league games, thanks to a 112-54 thrashing on Massachusetts in the opener. The Rams also defeated Duquesne, 71-68.
The potent offense is led the A-10's leading scorer, Robyn Parks, who is averaging 23.7 ppg while also posing a strong defensive threat with 9.7 rpg. Parks earned her fourth Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honor this week.
Parks is not the only threat, with three other players also averaging double figures. Isis Thorpe is averaging 13.3 ppg. Keira Robinson scores 11.5 ppg while dishing out a team-best 6.5 assists, and Jessica Pellechio adds 11.0 ppg.
The squad features just two seniors including Parks and Zakia Williams. Thorpe and Robinson are freshmen and Pellechio is a sophomore.
