Complete ResultsSTATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The La Salle golf team shot a 298 (+14) in round one at the Rutherford Intercollegiate to lead host Penn State and ACC foe Maryland to highlight the first 36 holes of action on Saturday. The Explorers shot 306 (+22) in round two to drop to 13th in the competitive field.
"We got off to a really nice start today but just couldn't keep the momentum going in the second round," head coach
Brad Kane said. "Beating programs like Penn State and Maryland in the first round is a nice accomplishment for us but we want a little more tomorrow. This is a strong field so the place we're in isn't a bad thing."
Senior
Mike Johnson continued to lead the team as his illustrious career faces its final eight days. His consistent 73-73=146 (+4) tied him for 19th in the 78-player field. He shot a three-over 38 in his first nine but rebounded to play the remaining 27 holes in one-over par, sprinkling in five birdies.
Junior
Greg Goodreds is in 59th with a 75-77=152 (+10). He had three birdies during the day. Freshman
Joe Markmann shot a 79-74=153 (+11) and is tied for 60th. He was the only Explorer to better his score in round two and was aided by playing his final 16 holes at one-over.
Sophomore
Justin Smith and senior
Tyler Fewell had similar days, each shooting 75 in the morning. Smith carded a 82 in the afternoon, while Fewell had an 83.
Minnesota leads the field by nine strokes after blistering the course with a 286-278=564 (-4). Rutgers is in second at +5, followed by Eastern Michigan (+14), Army (+14) and Bowling Green (+15).
Jose Mendez of Minnesota leads the field with his 68-65=133 (-9) with 18 holes to play. Rutgers' Jonathan Renza is only two shots back with a 69-66=135 (-7).
Play concludes on Sunday morning.
