LUTZ, Fla. - La Salle senior golfer
Mike Johnson has been named to the All-Atlantic 10 team, it was announced yesterday following the conclusion of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship at TPC Tampa Bay. Johnson is the first Explorer to earn All-Atlantic 10 honors since the university joined the league in 1995-96.
Johnson finished his senior campaign with a personal-best scoring average of 74.53, which included a season-low of 70 three different times (Turning-Stone, Seton Hall and Lafayette). He led La Salle eight times this season and a remarkable 28 times out of 42 events in his career. Johnson posted five top twenty finishes this season, including three top ten showings and two top five finishes. He placed third at Lafayette and fifth at Villanova this spring.
He shot a two-under 71-71=142 to finish seventh at the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship and two-over 74-73-71=218 to tie for 19th at the 2013 A-10 Championship. Both are the lowest scores by an Explorer at A-10s.
The Ambler, Pa. native turned in one of the best careers by any La Salle golfer. His career scoring average was 75.17 and he appeared in every tournament since arriving at La Salle in the fall of 2010. He averaged 76.6 strokes/round as a freshman before dropping to 74.9 as a sophomore. He averaged 75.1 strokes/round as a junior. His collegiate low was a 68 at the GW Intercollegiate on March 17, 2012.
Johnson also had success outside of La Salle, qualifying for the 2012 US Amateur at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado. He was also the runner-up at the 2010 Golf Association of Philadelphia Patterson Cup.
He was joined on the All-Atlantic 10 team by Kevin Yerks (George Mason), Joe Leavitt (Rhode Island), Jack Persons (GW), T.J. McNulty (SJU), Josh Stauffer (SBU), Danny Pizetoski (UR), Adam Ball (VCU), Matt Ball, Jr. (VCU), and Rocky Khara (VCU).
Matt Ball of VCU was the Coach of the Year.
