Softball Primed for A-10 Tournament Appearance

Full A-10 Release
A-10 Tournament Bracket

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. –
La Salle softball is set to make its first postseason appearance under the direction of second-year head coach Ron Shoemaker. The Explorers found out earlier in the week that they punched their ticket to next week's A-10 Tournament, hosted at Fordham this season. However, the identity of their seed and opponent were still yet to be determined. After yesterday's results the Explorers have locked up the sixth and final seed and a rematch with crosstown rival Saint Joseph's.

"It will be our first trip in a little while, but we are going to be ready," Shoemaker said.

The Explorers will be the second matchup on Wednesday, as #4 Massachusetts and #5 Dayton will clash at noon. #6 La Salle and #3 Saint Joseph's are scheduled to play at 2:30 PM.

The Blue and Gold will look to score some revenge over their Big 5 rival. Saint Joseph's defeated the Explorers in both games of a tightly contested doubleheader on April 23.

"It was tough to drop both games," Shoemaker said. "We definitely felt we could have had both of those games."

It will be a reunion of sorts for a couple members of the coaching staff. Shoemaker was an assistant coach at Saint Joseph's for four seasons, before taking the helm for the Explorers in 2013. He helped the team to tournament appearances during all four years of his tenure there. Pitching coach Taryn Ashway also is extremely familiar with the Hawks. Just last season her phenomenal work in the pitching circle led the Hawks to the A-10 regular season crown and an appearance in the A-10 Tournament title game.

The Explorers will look to score a win to earn a rematch with #2 Saint Louis by beating the Hawks. Tournament host #1 Fordham awaits the winner of UMass and Dayton. Winner's bracket matchups will begin Thursday, while the losers of the opening round will battle for their tournament lives in the loser's bracket matchup on Wednesday evening at 5:30 PM.

"The season starts fresh this Wednesday," Shoemaker said. "There are six teams still playing and they all have a clean slate, so we have as good a shot as any."
