Joe Markmann (72) led the way for the Explorers on Saturday in the final round of the Rutgers Invitational. Acierno finished 13th in the 95-player field with his 70-74-71=215 (+3), setting a new personal best 54-hole score as a collegian. His previous best was a 218 at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship.
Markmann's 72 was a collegiate best as well, breaking his 73 he shot at Turning Stone and also George Mason. His 54-hole score of 76-77-72=225 (+13) put him in a tie for 44th.
"We're moving in the right direction," head coach
Brad Kane said. "This was a lot better than Colgate. The guys played with a lot more confidence. We didn't beat a lot of teams but the numbers were good. It's what we needed right now."
Senior
Justin Smith shot a 77 (+6) on Saturday for his 74-76-77=227 (+15) to tie for 51st.
Greg Goodreds finished 70th with a 77-75-80=232 (+20) and graduate student
Tonny Aizpun shot a 77-77-79=233 (+21) to tie for 71st.
As a team, the Explorers were consistent, carding a 299-300-299=898 (+46) to tie for 12th in the 18-team field. The Blue and Gold were five shots out of ninth place.
Wofford (+7) came from behind to win the team title by one shot over Rutgers (+8). Fairfield was third (+10) followed by Wagner (+16) and Lehigh (+18).
Fairfield's Steve Burak was the medalist with a 68-66-72=206 (-7). Rutgers' Jacob Stockl was second with a 66-69-72=207 (-6).
The Explorers will visit George Mason next weekend.Â
