ELVERSON, Pa. - The La Salle golf team will host its fourth annual home tournament this weekend at Stonewall North on Sunday and Monday to wrap up the regular season. The event has been renamed the Finegan Invitational this year in memory of noted golfer and writer Jim Finegan '51, the only Explorer golfer in the La Salle Hall of Athletes.
"This should really be a great event for us," head coach
Brad Kane said. "Stonewall is a fantastic facility and we're very happy to move our tournament there. Hopefully we'll be able to make this a recurring event. The field filled up very quickly for this, as Stonewall's got a great reputation. It'll be a great place for our seniors to play their last regular season college event."
Stonewall North, located in Elverson, Pa. just southeast of Reading, was named one of the top 10 best new courses in the country by "The Golfer" Magazine when it opened in 2003. Along with the Old Course at Stonewall, the site will host the 2016 USGA Mid-Amateur Championship. The North Course will play 6,735 yards on a par 70 layout.
In addition to an outstanding collegiate career for the Explorers, Mr. Finegan was a noted golf writer. He received the United States Golf Association's Herbert Warren Wind Book Award in 2006 and is consiered the American authority on golf courses in the United Kingdom and Ireland. He also received the Golf Association of Philadelphia's Distinguished Service Award in 2010. Mr. Finegan wrote the official histories of Pine Valley Golf Club and Aronimink Golf Club. He won club championships at Pine Valley and Philadelphia Country Club. He passed away in March.
"We were really pleased when Mr. Finegan agreed to lend his name to the event," Kane said. "It made sense to name it in his honor considering his status as the only golfer in the La Salle Hall of Athletes. He was instrumental in the founding of Stonewall, a place he genuinely loved. I talked to him a few months ago and he was planning to attend. We're sad to have lost him, but having his name on the event helps his spirit live on."
La Salle will host Hofstra, Iona, Lafayette, Manhattan, Monmouth, Niagara, Rider, St. Francis Brooklyn, Villanova, Wagner and Alvernia. The teams will tee off at 10 AM on both Sunday and Monday for the 36-hole event.
