OLEAN, N.Y. - In a hotly contested battle that saw four singles matches go to a third and deciding set, the La Salle University women's tennis team dug deep and earned its first win over an Atlantic 10 opponent since the 2006 season by a score of 4-3 over St. Bonaventure on Tuesday.
Senior
Jade Smith, junior
Brittany Poje and sophomore
Ali Snyder each won in their respective singles positions, with Poje and Smith teaming up to win a critical doubles match at the No. 2 spot. Snyder paired with sophomore
Tiffany Theophil to secure La Salle's first point of the team competition with a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles.
With an early lead, Poje was the first to earn a victory in singles action for the Explorers at the No. 3 position. After an even first set that was decided in a tiebreak, Poje ran away with the second, 6-1, to put La Salle two points away from triumph.
Snyder, who was slotted at the No. 2 spot, battled back after falling in the first set to win the second and third with relative ease, 6-1 and 6-0. At No. 4 singles, Smith won the first set, dropped the second and rebounded for a 6-4 win in the third to secure the first A-10 win for the Explorers since defeating Saint Joseph's at the 2006 Atlantic 10 Championships.
La Salle concludes its spring break trip on Thursday, March 15 with a road match at Akron.
