Women’s Basketball Opens Big 5 Play with Penn on Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia Big 5 play opens up on Wednesday for the La Salle women's basketball team (6-2) as it welcomes the Penn Quakers (5-1) to Tom Gola Arena for a 7 p.m. tip.
 
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS:
  • La Salle ended its five-game win streak against Navy in the championship game of the 2019 Navy Classic, 61-46. In the game, sophomore Kayla Spruill scored a team high 14 points, followed by freshman Christina Kline with a career best 11.
  • Freshmen and sophomores are making up 64.9% of the Explorers scoring this season, including 55.9% from the team's top four scorers in freshmen Claire Jacobs, sophomore Kayla Spruill, freshman Jordon Lewis, and freshman Amy Jacobs.
  • Freshman Claire Jacobs is pacing the Blue & Gold with 11.2 points per outing. The rookie is hitting 39.8% of her shots and 42.9% of her three-point attempts. She's recorded 10+ points in five games this season and 15+ in three.
  • Sophomore Kayla Spruill is second in scoring at 10.5 ppg and rebounding at 5.4 rpg.
  • Senior Shalina Miller tops the squad in rebounding with 7.8 per game. The Philadelphia, Pa. native also leads the Explorers with 2.8 bpg. Miller has 22 blocks this season, which ranks her first in the Atlantic 10 and ninth in the nation. She set the single season record with 64 deflections last year and is 16 shy of tying the all-time mark set by Amy Griffin '18 at 151. Miller has at least two blocks in each game this season, including 3+ in five outings.
  • Not only has senior Shalina Miller had success blocking shots, but the entire Explorers team has as well. La Salle has 48 deflections, which is best in the Atlantic 10 and sixth in the country.
  • The Explorers have been on fire from long range this season, hitting a league best 9.4 three-pointers per game. The 9.4 per game and 75 made rank 16th and fifth in the nation, respectively.
SCOUTING THE QUAKERS:
  • Penn is 5-1 overall after a win Monday night over Hartford.
  • The Quakers are scoring 71.1 points on average and holding opponents to just 49.0 points per outing.
  • Penn is led by Kayla Padilla who is dropping 18.3 ppg on 49.4% shooting.
  • Eleah Parker is the only other Quaker to average double digit point totals with 12.2 ppg. She's also the leading rebounder with 6.5 rpg.
SERIES HISTORY:
  • In a storied series, La Salle holds the all-time record 35-11. The two teams first squared off during the 1973-74 season.
  • At home, the Explorers hold a better record than on the road at 18-3 compared to 14-8.
  • Penn took last year's game by a sizeable margin and have won six of the last nine.
