PHILADELPHIA -- La Salle University senior men's tennis standout
Francesco Mowrey picked up two season-ending accolades from the Atlantic 10, it was announced on Monday. For the second straight season, Mowrey was named to the league's All-Academic Team and for the first time in his career he earned All-Atlantic 10 status with a second-team nod.
Mowrey, who has played No. 1 singles and doubles in each of the last three seasons for the Explorers, posted victories over three All-A-10 opponents this spring and helped La Salle make history at the end of the season. Squaring off against George Mason in the opening round of the A-10 Championships in Florida, he teamed with freshman
Nassim Fenjiro at No. 1 doubles to win a critical match that helped La Salle secure the doubles point.
The doubles-point victory set the tone for the Explorers' 4-2 win over that sixth-seeded Patriots, marking the first time in A-10 Tournament history that an 11 seed had advanced past the opening round. Mowrey boasted regular-season wins over First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection Eddy Ayers from George Mason and fellow second-teamers Fabian Mauritzon of Fordham and Chris Corrao of Duquesne.
Also a standout student, Mowrey graduated this spring with a bachelor's degree in communications. He earned the Athletic Department's top academic honor by receiving the Academic Excellence Award, by virtue of his 3.93 cumulative GPA.
Dayton's Jordan Benjamin was named A-10 Player of the Year for the second consecutive season while VCU's Anthony Rossi earned Coach of the Year honors.
