Field Hockey's Amanda Chapin Uses Summer Vacation to Give Back

Chapin

Field Hockey | July 25, 2019

PHILADELPHIA - Coming off a career year as a field hockey player, rising La Salle University senior Amanda Chapin took a week out of her summer vacation to tend to the needs of those less fortunate.

Chapin teamed up with Project Appalachia Project as part of La Salle's Lasallian Immersion and Volunteer Experience (LIVE) program in May, traveling to Brenton, West Virginia to work on uplifting home development projects for low-income families in the area.

Upon arrival, Chapin and the group, including Associate Director of Athletic Training Nina Kauffman, were split into smaller groups to work on multiple houses. From siding installation to roof work, the team spent numerous hours upgrading the community's residences.

Through this process, the students gained an enhanced understanding of the culture and the underlying causes of the economic hardship that this particular area of the Appalachian region faces.

"While we were there, we got to learn about the community and the people who we were helping," Chapin said. "It was a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone!"

An all-around student-athlete, Chapin started all 18 games for the Explorers and tied for team lead and tied for eighth in Atlantic 10 with eight assists. She added five goals and ranked third on the team with 18 points, setting career marks in all three offensive categories.

A standout student, she was named A-10's All-Academic Team, honored as a Scholar of Distinction by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association and was named Philadelphia Field Hockey Student-Athlete of the Week. Entering her senior year, Chapin maintains an impressive 3.97 GPA as a psychology major and was also named co-captain for the 2019 season.

"We are extremely proud to have Amanda represent not only our field hockey program but La Salle Athletics at the "Project Appalachia Project," head coach Kelly Broadway said. "Amanda is involved in many different service organizations at La Salle and is a member of our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She is a wonderful leader and example of the Lasallian Brotherhood mission of service to others."

La Salle's field hockey team, under the direction of second-year head coach Broadway, will begin the 2019 campaign on Friday, August 30 at the newly-surfaced Hank DeVincent Field. The contest is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
