Explorers Rout Penn for Sixth Win in a Row, 22-2

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle University baseball team won its sixth consecutive game in dominating fashion on Friday, putting up season highs of 22 runs and 22 hits to rout Penn on the road, 22-2. Twelve different Explorers had a hit and seven had multi-hit games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite the final score, La Salle had to come from behind early as Penn scored on an error in the first inning to go up 1-0.
  • The Explorers got it going in the third inning as graduate student Ryan Guckin struck an RBI double and junior Nick O'Day hit a two-run single to give La Salle a 3-1 lead.
  • It was all Explorers from there, adding four more runs in the fourth inning, with junior Tatem Levins hitting a sacrifice fly, senior Alfonse Sadallah scoring on a wild pitch and Guckin delivering a two-run double to make it 7-1.
  • La Salle kept its foot on the gas pedal with three more runs in the fifth. Sadallah started it with an RBI double and then scored on an RBI groundout by Levins, while sophomore Elijah Dickerson made it 10-1 with an RBI double to right.
  • After Penn scored a run on a sacrifice fly, the Explorers answered with four runs in the sixth inning. Freshman Will Binder hit an RBI single and then scored on an RBI groundout by Sadallah, before an RBI single by sophomore Connor Coolahan and an RBI double by Levins pushed the advantage to 14-2.
  • Still not done, La Salle scored eight runs in the ninth inning for the second straight game. Redshirt sophomore Bubba Weigel started it by smacking a solo home run, his second of the year. Later in the inning, freshman Emmanuel Rodriguez, sophomore John DeMucci and then Weigel all drew bases-loaded walks, before O'Day delivered the final blow with a three-run triple.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • La Salle last won six games in a row during the 2013 season. It's the team's longest win streak since 2011 when the Explorers won nine straight games.
  • The 22 runs on 22 hits are the most since the Explorers hung 24 runs on 23 hits against Saint Peter's back in 2019. It is the second most runs scored by La Salle in the last 20 years. La Salle finished with eight doubles, also the most since that Saint Peter's game in 2019.
  • Not to be lost in all the offense, senior starting pitcher Colin Scanlon allowed just one earned run on four hits over 6.0 innings while striking out eight. Seniors James Kelly and Colin Kennedy also combined for three scoreless innings of relief.
  • Guckin is now on an eight-game hitting streak after going 3-for-5 with three doubles, three RBI and two runs scored.
  • O'Day drove in a career-high five runs over a three-hit day, while Binder also had three hits. Coolahan scored four runs, while Levins (3), Dickerson (2), Weigel (2) and Sadallah (2) all had multi-RBI games.
  • Four Explorers have now reached base safely in 10 or more consecutive games in Coolahan (12), Levins (11), Guckin (10) and Dickerson (10).
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers (12-7) will look to continue their winning ways with a doubleheader at Penn on Saturday. First pitch is slated for noon and both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
