PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore left-hander
Gabe Rappa fired eight strong innings to lead the La Salle University baseball team to an 8-2 win over St. Bonaventure on Sunday from Hank DeVincent Field.
The victory gave the Explorers a 3-1 series win as they improved off their best ever start in the Atlantic 10 Conference at 9-3 in the league, which puts them in first place in the A-10 standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- La Salle jumped right on St. Bonaventure from the start, plating three runs in the opening inning.
- Senior Jack Cucinotta scored the first run on a sacrifice fly by graduate student Ryan Guckin. Redshirt sophomore Nick Di Vietro drove in junior Tatem Levins with an RBI single and then sophomore Elijah Dickerson crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by junior Nick O'Day to make it 3-0.
- The Bonnies took advantage of an error in the second inning and made it a two-run game, 3-1, on a sacrifice fly to right field.
- The Explorers quickly extended their advantage though with four runs in the third. Freshman Will Binder lined a two-run double to center, and shortly after, O'Day stole home on a double steal. Senior Tommy Toal later knocked in Binder with a double down the left field line, opening up a 7-1 lead.
- Binder pushed the difference to 8-1 in the fifth when he drove home Di Vietro on an RBI groundout.
- Rappa found a groove on the mound and held the Bonnies in check, as they only scored one more unearned run on an error in the eighth inning.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Rappa tossed a career-high 8.0 innings and didn't allow any earned runs while striking out seven to improve to 2-1 on the year. Redshirt freshman Colin Yablonski entered in the ninth and struck out three of the four batters he faced to cap off the victory.
- Not only is La Salle's 9-3 league record its best ever since it joined the Atlantic 10, the Explorers are also the only team in the program to ever have 24 wins over the first 37 games in a season.
- Di Vietro continued his steadiness at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two runs, two walks, a stolen base and an RBI. Levins went 2-for-4, while Binder drove in three runs.
- With a stolen base on the day, Cucinotta took sole possession of seventh place on the program's career steals list with 39. It was his 21st stolen base of the season, which moves him up to a tie for eighth on the program's single-season list.
