BALTIMORE - The La Salle men's soccer team (1-1-0) treks to Maryland for a pair of contests this weekend, beginning Friday at UMBC (0-1-1). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Two days later, the Explorers take on Navy (1-0-1) for a Sunday evening match also beginning at 7 p.m. Both games will be streamed live online - UMBC on the America East Digital Network, and Navy on ESPN+ (subscription required).
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS:
- La Salle opened its home schedule with a big win over St. Francis Brooklyn on Monday, picking up a 1-0 result that also served as the first win in the head coaching career of Taylor Thames.
- Senior Nigel Buckley broke a scoreless tie with his second goal of the season in the 74th minute.
- Another senior, Mitch Foster, saw the first action of his La Salle career in goal and recorded two saves to pick up the shutout win.
- The Explorers outshot the Terriers, 12-6, including a 10-3 advantage over the final 45 minutes of the contest.
- Through two games, La Salle holds a 29-16 advantage in attempts and a 17-6 edge in shots on goal.
SCOUTING THE TERRIERS:
- UMBC has found the back of the net five times through two games, including three goals in a narrow 4-3 loss to Maryland, who was ranked just outside the USC Top 25 poll.
- Ryan Becher, who was named to the America East's All-Rookie Team two seasons ago, leads the team with a pair of scores.
- The Terriers were picked to finish sixth in the AE Preseason Coaches Poll.
SCOUTING THE MIDSHIPMEN:
- Navy enters the weekend with a 1-0-1 record, having tied with UMBC, 2-2, and earning a 1-0 win over Marist on Aug. 29.
- The Midshipmen were picked to finish fourth in the 2021 Patriot League preseason poll.
- Senior defender Matt Nocita was named Patriot League Preseason Defender of the Year, and was one of two Navy players named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team (midfielder David Jackson).
