APALACHIN, N.Y. - Senior
Karsen Rush fired a final-round, six-under-par 66, and stormed back from a five-shot deficit to win medalist honors at the Matthew's Auto Intercollegiate on Monday afternoon.
Rush closed the 36-hole event at five-under par 139 to finish one shot in front of Lehigh's Yuxuan Song. As a team, the Explorers finished second at 581, six strokes behind Lehigh.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After closing round one at one-over par 73, Rush started out hot on day two, recording a birdie on his second and third holes.
- He made the turn having carded four birdies against no bogeys (32), and moved to five-under on his round after another birdie on the 12th hole.
- A bogey on the 13th was quickly negated with another birdie on 14, before an action-packed final two holes.
- Rush bogeyed the par-3 17th and was a stroke off the pace before the final hole - the 523-yard, par-5 18th.
- The senior reached the green in two and set up a 20-foot putt for eagle to win the tournament.
- The lefty calmly sank the putt and raised a fist in celebrating his first-ever collegiate tournament victory.
- In addition to Rush's performance, freshman Kevin Lydon racked up his third Top 10 finish of the season with a final-round 70.
- Lydon closed in a tie for 8th place at 145, two strokes in front of Nikita Romanov who tied for 16th.
- Anthony Garcia and Armand Loscalzo rounded out the starting five for the Explorers.
