Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – The Explorers came up short against a high-powered #18 Massachusetts field hockey team on Friday afternoon.
La Salle will be off until next Friday when they travel to North Carolina to face the Davidson Wildcats in A-10 Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Minutewomen came out of the gate firing and took advantage of their first penalty corner opportunity. Steph Gottwals found the back of the cage within the first few minutes to put UMASS up early.
- Later in the first, a breakaway opportunity by UMASS allowed them to take a 2-0 lead. Gottwals scored her second goal of the match.
- La Salle was persistent in the second quarter offensively. The team had five penalty quarter opportunities, but the UMASS defense held strong as they went into the half with a 2-0 lead.
- The Explorers had many scoring opportunities in the third. Their best coming off a Quinn Medico centering pass in front of the empty UMASS goal, but no one was home to get La Salle on the board.
- The Minutewomen entered the final frame of play with the 2-0 lead.
- Emily Crawford found the back of the cage in a wild goal scored that made it past the Explorer defense put UMASS up 3-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- La Salle had continual offensive pressure and out-shot the Minutewomen 16-12.
- Dunja Hartsch was the top shooter for La Salle putting four shots out, three of which on goal.
- Tatum Johnson was a strong force for La Salle's offensive having three shots total.
- The Explorers had the edge in corner shots taken with ten, opposed to the UMASS five.
