AMHERST, Ma. –
Renee Washington continued to show her flair for the dramatic and scored the game-winning goal five minutes into overtime to give La Salle women's soccer a dramatic 3-2 victory over Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field.
"I think this game really shows the perserverance and grit of our team," said head coach
Paul Royal. "We fell behind early and battled back, they tied it late and we still found a way to win. I'm extremeley proud of our girls today for overcoming this obstacle."
The Explorers (13-0-1, 5-0-0) also received goals from
Gabriella Carbone and
Kelsey Haycook and outshot UMass 25-5.
Carbone's goal tied the game at 1-1 late in the first half off an assist from Washington. Haycook's tally came early in the first half and put La Salle on top 2-1.
The Minutemen (9-3-2, 3-1-1) tied the game in the 79th minute off an own goal, which eventually led to overtime.
For Washington, the game-winner was the fifth of the season and 10th of her career in just 35 games.
With the victory, La Salle broke the all-time school record for wins in a season with 13 and improved to 6-0 on the road in 2011.
Goalkeeper
Melissa Sanger also had a record-setting day as the redshirt senior tied former Explorer Kaitlin Glass for the all-time school record in wins with 33.
The Explorers will try to remain unbeaten next week when they face another tough Atlantic 10 road trip at Charlotte and Saint Louis.
