Women’s Soccer Clinches Third Straight Win, Fifth Consecutive Shutout in 3-0 Victory at Albany

Box Score

ALBANY, N.Y. – Five games, five shutouts for the La Salle Women's Soccer team.

For the first time in 26 seasons of women's soccer at La Salle, the Explorers have begun a season with five consecutive shutouts, capped by an impressive 3-0 win over Albany on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field.

The Explorers (4-0-1) outshot Albany 9-1 in a one-sided possession game.

Redshirt senior goalkeeper Melissa Sanger only had to make one save to preserve her 15th career shutout and fifth of the young season. Sanger is now one shutout shy of the school record held by Kaitlin Glass.

Renee Washingtonscore d her fourth goal of the season in the 23rd minute to put La Salle in front 1-0.

Kelsey Haycook extended the lead to 2-0 in the 55th minute off a header from a corner by Ashley Chilcoat (New Freedom, Pa/Susquehannock).

Two minutes later, all-conference senior defender Jess Hopton scored her first goal of the season and the second of her career.

The fifth consecutive shutout breaks a school record previously set in 2009 when a Royal coached his team to four straight clean sheets.

La Salle also matches another school record set in 2009 as they start the season with a five-match unbeaten streak. The Explorers started 4-0-1 in 2009 and lost their sixth match of the season against Penn.

La Salle will have a full week off before returning to action next Sunday, September 18 on the road against Princeton.

On overall performance:
"They had a couple threats again our defense is playin awesome.  We were very sluggish and sloppy on the ball but we had enough in the tank to score three goals."

On weekend:
"We extended a lot of energy in Friday night's game.  the most important thing was to learn from the Friday-Sunday games."

On breaking a school record:
"All that stuff is a by product of what these kids are doing day in and day out."

On not becoming complacent:
"When we walked off the field we acted like we didn't even win, they know they can paly better but we did what was necessary to come away with a positive result."
