PRINCETON, N.J. –
Kelsey Haycook scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute and
Melissa Sanger tied the all-time La Salle record with her 16th career shutout in a 1-0 clean sheet against Princeton on Sunday afternoon at Roberts Stadium.
Sanger needed four saves in net to keep her shutout streak alive as she becomes the second women's soccer player in La Salle history to record 16 career shutouts, tying former Explorer Kaitlin Glass.
As a team, La Salle leaped in front of Penn as the best defensive team in the nation on Sunday. The Quakers allowed three goals against George Mason to end their shutout streak. La Salle is now the only team in Division I that has not allowed a goal yet this season.
“It's really a testament to our hard work in the offseason and our overall leadership,” said head coach
Paul Royal.
Haycook squirted free off a free kick from
Jess Hopton in the 83rd minute and had a nice one-touch past the Princeton keeper for her second game-winning goal of the season. Haycook now leads the team with five goals.
The Explorers (5-0-1) have won four straight matches and are off to the best start in team history. They will try to keep the shutout streak alive this Tuesday with another Ivy League road matchup at Cornell.
