PHILADELPHIA - Richmond scored an early first-half goal and held on as the La Salle men's soccer squad fell 1-0 to the visiting Spiders on Friday evening at McCarthy Stadium.
Mitch Reavis notched an unassisted shot in the 10th minute to put the Spiders (5-9, 1-4 Atlantic 10) on the board, getting a hard-hit grounder through traffic into the left side of the net from about 20 yards out.
After giving up the first three shots of the game, including the goal, the Explorers (8-4-2, 2-2 Atlantic 10) settled in, outshooting the Spiders 4-1 over the next 25 minutes.
Rookie
Andrew Connors started the second half and recorded two shots on goal, both of which were at close range but picked up by Spider goalie Thomas Hand.
The Explorers turned up the pressure late in the second half, controlling the majority of play on their half of the field, but could not convert their chances.
The squad outshot the visitors 14-9. Hand and
John McCarthy each recorded five saves in net.
The Explorers wore pink warm-up shirts prior to the game as tonight was the team's designated Breast Cancer Awareness game.
La Salle returns to action on Sunday, when VCU comes to town for a 1 p.m. contest.
