SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Rookie pitcher
Alicia Aughton was named to the USC Upstate All-Tournament Team on Sunday afternoon following the conclusion of the Upstate Tournament at Cyrill Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C. The Explorers dropped their tournament finale against the host Spartans, 8-0, in five innings.
Aughton pitched three games this weekend, starting one. She posted a 1.95 ERA on the weekend after giving up just four earned runs in 14.1 innings of work. She also struck out six and issued just one walk.
The Explorers (0-4) wrapped up play on Sunday morning with their second contest of the weekend against USC Upstate (12-0). Upstate got two runs each in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings to take the 8-0 decision in the run-rule shortened game.
Linnette Siedler gave the Explorers their best shot when she drew a leadoff walk in the top of the first. She advanced to second on a
Liz Reed sacrifice bunt and made it to third on a passed ball with two outs, but the squad could not capitalize as a strikeout ended the inning.
Reed got the Explorers' lone hit with a leadoff single to center in the top of the fourth inning.
Aughton and
Kristin Travers split duties in the circle with Travers pitching the opening two innings and Aughton going the remaining 2.1. Travers gave up four runs on five hits and struck out one. Aughton gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits, struck out one and walked none.
Upstate's Hannah Alexander pitched four innings, giving up one hit while striking out six and walking two. Cassee Clauser closed out the game, issuing two walks and striking out two.
The Explorers return to action on Monday, March 5, when they head to Georgia Southern for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
