Box Score CONWAY, S.C. - Rookie pitcher
Alicia Aughton was terrific on Sunday, pitching a complete-game two-hitter as the La Salle softball team wrapped up play in the Chanticleer Showdown with a 1-0 win over host Coastal Carolina.
Aughton scattered those two hits while striking out four in her first collegiate complete-game shutout. She also recorded one of La Salle's two hits on the day, going 1-for-3 at the plate for the Explorers (2-10).
Liz Reed scored the game's lone run in the top of the third. She blasted a leadoff double to left field and scored the unearned run when
Alyssa Bitsimis reached on a throwing error by Chanticleer first baseman Sara Rasley.
Coastal (20-5) threatened in the seventh with a Kiana Quolas single just past Aughton. The Explorers responded with two quick outs on a strikeout and fielder's choice groundout, but Cacia Pierre drew a walk to put runners at first and second. But the Blue & Gold ended the threat when Bitsimis tagged out pinch runner Nicole Saggiomo for a fielder's choice on the next at-bat.
Quolas took the loss in the circle for the Chants, going all seven innings and giving up one unearned run on two hits and striking out seven.
The Explorers return to action locally on Friday, when they wrap up spring tournament play at Delaware from March 16-18.
