PHILADELPHIA - Rookie
Kristin Travers blasted her first collegiate home run in the first game of a doubleheader against Fordham in the Atlantic 10 opener for both squads at West Campus Field on Friday afternoon.
Fordham took the first game 9-1 in five innings and the second game 11-0, also in five innings.
The Rams (14-14, 2-0 Atlantic 10) got on the board fast with three runs in the top of the first. Jamie LaBovick led off with a home run, followed by a walk issued to Nicole Callahan. Paige Ortiz followed up with a two-run home run to put the visitors up 3-0.
The Rams got three more in the second to go up 6-0.
Travers got the Explorers (3-17, 0-2 Atlantic 10) on the board with her solo blast with one out in the second. She lined it down the left field line and it stayed fair for her first collegiate home run.
Following a scoreless frame in the third, the Rams got one more in the fourth and two more in the fifth to end the game at 9-1.
Alicia Aughton and Travers split time in the circle with Aughton taking the loss. Aughton went three innings, giving up six runs on six hits. Travers pitched the final two, giving up three runs on three hits. Jen Mineau earned the win for the Rams, going the distance and giving up one run on three hits and struck out 12.
The Rams struck early again in the second game, with Ortiz's second two-run home run in the first inning. They went up 4-0 on Chelsea Palumbo's two-RBI single. They also got five in the second with four coming on Michele Daubman's grand slam.
The Explorers loaded the bases in the bottom of the second.
Shannon Skomorucha blasted a leadoff single to right field and
Linnette Siedler drew a walk to put runners on first and second. The bases loaded on
Tristan Musho's at-bat. Ram shortstop Palumbo misfielded a Musho grounder when attempting to get Siedler out at second, and all runners were safe.
Liz Reed tried to extend the rally with a rocket to right field which was snagged by right-fielder Daubman to end the inning.
Aughton took the loss in the second game, going two innings and giving up nine runs on 10 hits and striking out one. Travers pitched the final three innings, giving up two runs on six hits and also striking out one. Ram rookie Taylor Pirone went the distance for the win, giving up two hits and striking out five.
The Explorers head on the road next Wednesday when they travel across town to Penn for a two-game set at 4 p.m.
