PHILADELPHIA -
Alicia Aughton led the La Salle softball team with a 3-for-7 evening, but Penn stifled the Explorers 8-0 in six innings in the first game and 5-1 in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Penn Park on Wednesday.
Four errors and two passed balls hampered the Explorers (3-19) in the first game as the Quakers got seven unearned runs. Penn's Dahlerbruch put down a RBI groundout in the first to score Turchin, who led off the inning with a walk.
The Quakers (15-10) got five more runs in the third, four of those unearned. The lone earned run was scored by Arneson after hitting a leadoff double to right center.
Coloma hit a RBI single to short to bring in Turchin in the fourth, and after a scoreless fifth the Quakers got one more in the sixth to end the game.
The Explorers only had four baserunners in the first game, including
Alyssa Bitsimis who drew a leadoff walk to start the game. She advanced to second on a stolen base, but that was the farthest the Explorers got.
Tristan Musho drew a walk in the second, and Aughton and
Linnette Siedler each singled in the fourth and fifth innings.
Kristin Travers pitched the entire first game, giving up eight runs (just one earned) on nine hits and striking out one. Borden went the distance for the Quakers, limiting Explorers bats to two hits while striking out nine and walking two.
The nightcap was shaping up to be a pitchers' duel with both teams staying off the scoreboard through the first four and a half innings. Penn opened up the game in the fifth, scoring all five of its runs. Erosa plated the first two runs with a two-RBI double before Dahlerbruch blasted a three-run home run.
After a scoreless sixth, the Explorers got one back in the top of the seventh.
Liz Reed knocked out a one-out single through the left side and Travers followed up with a single in similar fashion. Siedler loaded the bases when she was hit by a pitch.
Shannon Skomorucha capitalized with a pinch hit single through the left side to score Reed.
The Quakers clamped down after that, recording two consecutive outs to end the Explorers' hopes.
Aughton hurled the nightcap, going the distance and giving up five runs on 10 hits and striking out two. Mann and Voves split duties for the Quakers with Voves earning the decision. Mann went three innings, giving up three hits and striking out two. Voves went the final four, giving up one run on five hits and striking out nine.
The Explorers return to action on Friday when they travel to Ambler to take on Temple in a single game at 3 p.m.
