PHILADELPHIA - La Salle got on the board with back-to-back home runs in the first inning of game one, but were unable to hold on as the Explorers dropped a 4-2 decision to Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon at West Campus Field. The Billikens won the second game, 12-0 in five innings.
Shannon Skomorucha led the Explorers with a 3-for-5 day.
Megan Hodgson went 2-for-4 with a home run and
Liz Reed added the other round-tripper.
Saint Louis (19-23, 6-6 Atlantic 10) went 8-for-9 on stolen base attempts. Laura Bohning went 4-for-6 and Lindsay Friedman went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to lead the Billikens.
The Billikens got an unearned in the top of the first on an Alyson Brand sac fly to center. The Explorers (6-31, 0-10 Atlantic 10) answered in the bottom of the frame with Reed's and Hodgson's back-to-back blasts to go up 2-1. Reed knocked out her first home run of the season to right field. Hodgson ripped one to center for her third on the season.
The two squads played near flawless second and third innings before the Billikens opened up a three-run fourth. Kelsey Biggs singled up the middle to bring home Bohning, and Friedman followed up with a RBI single up the middle to score Rachel Faletto. Biggs also scored on the throw for the third inning.
Kristin Travers blasted a leadoff double in the fifth to try to start a rally. She moved to third on a wild pitch, but the Billikens got three straight outs to end the inning.
Neither team got much else down the stretch as the 4-2 score held up.
Alicia Aughton went the distance, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits and struck out seven. Julian Austin got the decision for Saint Louis, also going all seven and giving up two runs on seven hits and striking out five.
The second game was all Saint Louis, as the Billikens held Explorer bats to just two hits while pounding out 15. The Billikens got five runs in the second sparked by back-to-back homers by Biggs and Friedman. Kerri Dockins doubled and came home on Harcar's single down the right field line. Bohning singled to score Jessica Buschjost, who drew a walk. Erin Harcar came in on a double steal for the inning's fifth run.
Saint Louis put up five more in the third on six hits, a hit-by-pitch and two Explorer miscues. Four of those runs were on a two-out rally sparked by a Dockins double down the right field line.
A two-run Biggs homer in the fifth put the visitors up 12-0, and they retired the Explorers in order for the final score.
Alyssa Bitsimis and
Kristin Travers split duties in the nightcap. Bitsimis went two innings, giving up five runs on six hits and striking out two. Travers pitched the remainder of the game, giving up seven runs on nine hits. Kelcie Matesa went all five for the Billikens, limiting the Explorers to two hits and striking out seven.
The Explorers head on the road on Wednesday for an Atlantic 10 doubleheader at George Washington, starting at 3 p.m.
