PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle softball squad rallied from a 6-0 deficit in game one before falling 11-8 to St. Bonaventure in eight innings on Saturday afternoon at West Campus Field. The Bonnies took the nightcap 12-4 in six innings.
The Explorers wore orange jerseys in honor of MS Awareness and collected donations to contribute to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Megan Hodgson put together a 4-for-7 day with a RBI and four runs scored.
Kati Cooper and
Breanna DiTommaso had two hits apiece and
Alyssa Bitsimis blasted a two-run double.
St. Bonaventure (17-19, 6-8 Atlantic 10) went up 3-0 in the third on an Ashley Snider three-run homer that scored Brittany Storch and Brooke Frey. The Bonnies added three more in the fourth on another home run, this time from Frey, to also score Christine Watson and Lauren Waite.
The Explorers rallied with five runs on five hits and a walk in the fourth inning to get within 6-5.
Liz Reed led off with a single to center and the Bonnies then recorded two strikeouts. Cooper reached base on a Bonnie miscue to start the rally and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Shannon Skomorucha drove on Reed on a single just past the shortstop and Bitsimis then drew a walk.
Tristan Musho started a string of four straight singles, as she drove in Cooper.
Kristin Travers followed up with a blooper in front of second baseman Storch which scored Skomorucha. DiTommaso singled to left to score Musho for the fifth run.
The Explorers once again rallied in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead. Hodgson got on base with her first hit of the day, a single to second base.
Alicia Aughton drew a walk and two outs later, Bitsimis ripped a double to the wall in left center to score both Hodgson and Aughton.
The Bonnies responded with the long ball to regain an 8-7 lead as Watson hit a round-tripper to left to also score Hali Enderby.
The Explorers were not done yet, getting the tying run when Cooper drove the ball up the middle to score Hodgson who knocked a leadoff single to right. The Bonnies got two outs to end the inning.
The long ball once again came in play in the eighth, with Storch hitting the three-run homer as the Bonnies took an 11-8 lead. DiTommaso hit a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth but the Bonnies forced a pop-out to end the game.
Aughton went the distance, giving up 11 runs on 13 hits and striking out nine. Jen Sansano also pitched a complete game, giving up eight runs (three earned) on 10 hits and striking out six.
St. Bonaventure put up two runs in the first inning of the nightcap, a lead the Bonnies never relinquished.
The Explorers got one in the bottom of the first. DiTommaso drew a leadoff walk and Reed got on base ona hit-by-pich. DiTommaso came around on a wild pitch for the run.
The Bonnies got another in the second and three more in the third on two home runs. The Explorers got two back in the bottom of the third. Reed drew a two-out walk and Hodgson blasted a double to center. Aughton followed up with a two-run double to left to score both Reed and Hodgson.
St. Bonaventure got three more in the fourth to go up 9-3.
In the fifth, Cooper hit a RBI single up the middle to score Hodgson, who singled to left center. The Bonnies added the final three runs, all unearned, in the sixth and held the Explorers in the bottom of the frame to end the game.
Bitsimis tossed three innings, giving up six runs on seven hits. Travers pitched the last three, giving up six runs on six hits. Diana Phalon pitched a complete game for the Bonnies, giving up four runs on four hits.
The Explorers return to action on Tuesday when they head to UMBC for a twinbill starting at 3 p.m.
