BALTIMORE - Three Explorers put together multi-hit days as the La Salle softball team fell twice at UMBC on Tuesday afternoon in Baltimore. UMBC won the first game 3-2 and took the nightcap 5-3.
Shannon Skomorucha led the squad with a 3-for-4 day.
Tristan Musho and
Liz Reed also had two hits apiece.
UMBC's Ashley Carver and Taylor Hall both went 3-for-5 to lead the home squad.
The Explorers drew first blood in game one as
Kristin Travers came home on a Musho single in the fifth. Skomorucha led off the inning with a single through the left side to break up a no-hitter but was out on Travers' fielders choice. Travers then stole second and scored one out later on Musho's hit.
The Explorer lead did not last long as the Retrievers put up two runs in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Kayla Martinez singled for just the second hit of the game for the home squad and Carver followed up with a two-run home run to center.
The Retrievers added an unearned run in the sixth. Hall, who led off with a double, came around on a two-out Explorer miscue.
The Explorers got one back in the seventh when pinch hitter
Kati Cooper singled up the middle to score Skomorucha, who belted a one-out single to right center. UMBC forced a fielders choice groundout to end the game.
Alicia Aughton took the loss, giviing up three runs (two earned) on just five hits while striking out two. Martinez picked up her first win of the season, giving up two runs on five hits.
The Explorers once again got on the board first in the nightcap when
Liz Reed drove in
Danielle Cullen with a single.
UMBC got all the runs it needed in the fifth with a five-run outburst thanks to six straight singles and three Explorer miscues to go up 5-1.
The Explorers added a run each in the sixth and seventh.
Emily Moran hit a leadoff single up the middle and eventually scored on a Travers single up the middle in the sixth. Musho led off the seventh by drawing a walk and scored on a Moran sacrifice fly, but the Retrievers got the third out on a groundout to end the game.
Travers started the game, going 4.1 innings and giving up two runs on four hits. Aughton came on for 1.2 innings of relief, giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits. Heather Brown earned the win for the Retrievers, going all seven and giving up three runs on six hits and striking out six.
The Explorers return home on Thursday (4/26) for a 3 p.m. twinbill against Saint Peter's.
