PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle softball squad hits the dirt for two nonconference doubleheaders this week, starting today at 2:30 p.m. when the Explorers travel to UMBC. They return home on Thursday for a 3 p.m. start against Saint Peter's.
Scouting La Salle (6-35)...
Megan Hodgson hit 4-for-7 with a double and four runs scored to lead the Explorers against the Bonnies on Saturday.
Alyssa Bitsimis also blasted a two-run double to cap a rally from a 6-0 deficit in the first game before the team fell 11-8 in eight innings. St. Bona took game two 12-4 in six.
With her four hits on Saturday, Hodgson moved into the team batting average lead, sporting a .255 with a team-leading five doubles and tied for the team lead with three home runs.
Alicia Aughton is second with a .245 and leads the squad with 12 RBI and is tied with Hodgson with three homers. Brianna DiTommaso rounds out the top three, batting .243 with a team-best 27 hits.
Aughton currently carries a 3.61 ERA to lead the pitching staff. She is 6-17 and has recorded 82 strikeouts in 159.0 innings pitched.
Scouting UMBC (17-25)...
The Retrievers look to snap a 10-game skid and have not won since splitting with Saint Peter's on April 1. They most recently dropped a three-game series to Hartford.
Three players are batting over .300, led by Jessica Warner's .380. Taylor Hall is hitting .360 and Caitlin Chance is at .303. Warner leads the squad with 10 home runs, and she and Hall are tied for the team lead with 12 doubles. They are the only three players to have appeared and started in all 42 contests this season.
The Retrievers have four pitchers who see time, with Heather Brown and Katie Ferguson handling the majority of the pitching duties. Ferguson carries a team-best 2.95 ERA and 8-9 record while Brown has a 4.67 and is 6-10. Miranda Clark and Kayla Martinez also have 18 and 16 appearances, respectively.
Scouting Saint Peter's (5-38)...
The Peahens have struggled this year, but recently picked up their fifth win over Lafayette on April 18. They are coming off of 6-0 and 14-1 losses to Fairfield last weekend.
Nicole Olmeda is the lone Peahen hitting over .300, with a .309 and team-leading seven home runs and 20 RBI. Alexis Gallagher is hitting .254 and Francesca D'Amato is at .250 with a team-best nine doubles and 13 RBI.
Four Peahens rotate pitching duties. Erica Colon leads the staff with a 6.07 ERA in a team-high 25 appearances. Shelby Beaver carries a 6.42 ERA in 21 appearances and team-high 97.0 innings pitched. Peahen opponents are hitting .374 on the season.
