DAYTON, Ohio -
Liz Reed led the La Salle offense with a 4-for-7 day as the Explorers topped Dayton 3-1 in the first game of a doubleheader at UD Softball Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Flyers earned a 3-1 decision in the nightcap.
Reed went 2-for-4 in the first game and 2-for-3 in the nightcap.
Megan Hodgson went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in the first game, and
Kristin Travers added a 2-for-3 performance in the second game.
Hodgson got the Explorers on the board in the top of the first with her two-run blast. Reed ripped a one-out double to right center and Hodgson followed up with her blast to center.
The Explorers went up 3-0 in the top of the third, when
Shannon Skomorucha drove in Reed with a single to center. Reed reached earlier with a single to left field.
The Flyers got one back in the bottom of the frame when Dana Trotta scored on a Kathleen Maloof groundout. Dayton threatened in the sixth with runners on first and third with one out, but the Explorer defense got a pop-out and groundout to end the inning and prevent runners from scoring.
The Flyers hit a leadoff single in the seventh, but the Explorers recorded three straight outs to end the game and pick up the conference win.
Alicia Aughton earned the win with a complete game effort. She yielded just one run on four scattered hits. Sarah Wedel took the loss for the Flyers, pitching two innings and giving up three runs on three hits. Kayla English pitched the remainder of the game, limiting the Explorers to just two hits.
The Explorers drew first blood in the nightcap with a run in the top of the third.
Tristan Musho belted a leadoff single to right field and two outs later, Reed blasted a double to plate Musho.
The Flyers got all three of their runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run Lauren Nacke home run and a Lauren Sitter bunt single that plated Megan Barrett.
Alyssa Bitsimis got the start in game two, going four strong innings and yielding just four hits. Aughton came on in relief in the middle of the fifth, pitching the remaining 1.2 and suffering the loss. She gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits. English went 4.2 innings, giving up one run on five hits. Alysha Isaacson got the decision, relieving English for the remainder of the game and giving up just two hits.
The Explorers return to action on Friday (5/4) when they host Rhode Island in a single game at 3 p.m. They play Rhode Island again on Saturday at noon, which will also be the Senior Day game, before closing out the season with a doubleheader against Massachusetts on Sunday at noon.
