PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle softball team concludes the regular season this weekend as the Explorers host Rhode Island in single games on Friday and Saturday and Massachusetts for a doubleheader on Sunday. The program's annual Senior Day celebration will be held prior to Saturday's game against URI, with a ceremony starting at approximately 11:40 a.m.
Scouting La Salle (7-38, 1-15 Atlantic 10)...
The Explorers earned their first A-10 win last Sunday, edging Dayton 3-1 in the first game of a doubleheader behind a two-run home run from
Megan Hodgson in the first inning. They dropped the nightcap by the same score.
Liz Reed moved into the team lead in batting average, hitting .250 thanks to three straight multi-hit games. She has 26 hits on the season, including a team-best six doubles and two triples. Hodgson, who is batting .241, has belted a team-leading four home runs and 27 hits, along with five doubles and is tied with
Alicia Aughton for the team lead with 12 RBI.
Shannon Skomorucha rounds out the top three, batting .228.
Aughton is sporting a 3.51 ERA with 86 strikeouts in 175.1 innings pitched and is credited with all seven wins.
Scouting Rhode Island (19-30-1, 3-12-1)...
The Rams boast a trio of powerful bats, led by Courtney Prendergast who is batting .390 with a .660 slugging percentage. Prendergast has a team-best 55 hits, 14 doubles, eight home runs and 30 RBI. Nicole Massoni is batting .367 with 44 hits, 23 RBI and five round-trippers. Kelly Coker rounds out the trio with a .314 average, driving in 30 runs with seven doubles and five homers.
Sam Bedore sees the majority of time in the circle and she is recording a 4.20 ERA and 8-8 record. Erika Szymanski also sees significant time, and has a 5.51 ERA and 3-8 record.
Scouting Massachusetts (31-11, 15-0)...
UMass, the preseason A-10 favorite, looks to complete an undefeated conference season this weekend with trips to Fordham and then La Salle.
The Minutewomen are led offensively by Cyndil Matthew, who is hitting a blistering .408 with 53 hits. Quianna Diaz-Patterson is batting .377 with team-bests in doubles (14) and RBI (39) to go along with four home runs. Lindsey Webster is hitting .316 with 23 RBI and Katie Bettencourt rounds out the above-.300 club with a .314 average.
All-American pitcher Sara Plourde has been nearly unhittable, recording 447 strikeouts in 243 innings of work and sports a 1.90 ERA. Plourde has been getting some batting time in this season as well, leading the team with nine home runs.
