The Explorers conclude the season at 9-40, 3-17 in the Atlantic 10. UMass, which wrapped up an undefeated A-10 campaign and is the top seed in the upcoming week's conference championship, improved to 35-11 overall and 19-0 in the league.
Hodgson wrapped up the 2012 season as the Explorer batting leader, finishing with a season average of .266 and a team-best six home runs and 33 hits.
Six other Explorers recorded hits on Sunday, including
Kati Cooper,
Kristin Travers,
Alyssa Bitsimis,
Shannon Skomorucha,
Breanna DiTommaso and
Liz Reed.
Katie Bettencourt led the visitors with a 3-for-6 day with a home run and two RBI. All-American pitcher Sara Plourde was also potent at the plate, going 3-for-7 with her team-leading 11th home run and two RBI.
UMass got on the board in the third inning of the first game with a two-run single up the middle by Kyllie Magill, scoring Cyndil Matthew and Quianna Diaz-Patterson. The Minutewomen added two more unearned runs in the fourth on a home run to right center by Matthew, the first of the lefty slapper's career.
Lindsey Webster added a solo shot in the fifth.
The Explorers got one back in the seventh. They capitalized on some pitch control issues for Plourde, who hit Cooper with a pitch to lead off the inning and walked Musho to set up the RBI double for DiTommaso. She ripped a ball to the left field fence to score Cooper and break up the shutout bid.
Alicia Aughton took the loss in the circle, going all seven innings while giving up just two earned runs on seven hits and striking out five. Plourde also went the distance, limiting the Explorers to two hits and striking out 16 but issuing five walks.
UMass put up three first-inning runs in the nightcap. Matthew came in from third on a wild pitch, and following a Webster single, Plourde hit a two-run shot to right center.
The visitors went up 4-0 in the second on a Matthew sac fly and tacked on two more in the third on a Bettencourt two-run home run to left center.
Hodgson got the Explorers on the board in the fourth with a line drive shot over the left field fence for the solo home run.
UMass added one in the fifth on a RBI single by Stephanie Mayne and added four unearned runs in the sixth to go up 11-1. Webster blasted a three-run shot to center for the 11th run.
The Explorers put up a fight in the bottom of the sixth, mounting a four-hit rally on two outs to keep the season going a bit longer. Hodgson sparked the rally with a single ripped to left field and Skomorucha followed up with a blooper single to second base. Travers then snuck one through the left side for the third straight Explorer hit to load the bases. Cooper came in as a pinch hitter, and capitalized with a single to right to score Hodgson.
Bitsimis came up to bat and with the count 1-0, UMass brought in pitcher Bridget Lemire to relieve Webster. Lemire then walked Bitsimis with the bases loaded, bringing in Skomorucha for the second run, before getting the third out on a grounder back to the circle.
Travers took the loss in the circle, going the distance and giving up 11 runs (seven earned) on 11 hits. Webster, who saw her first time in the circle this season in place of Plourde, earned the win. She went 5.2 innings, being charged with three runs on six hits. Lemire came in for the final 0.1 inning, walking one.
