Explorers Top Long Island 2-1 in Final Nonconference Home Match

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - A quick goal in the second half gave the La Salle men's soccer team momentum as the Explorers came from behind to top LIU Brooklyn 2-1 at McCarthy Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Explorers upped their record to 5-1-1, dropping Long Island to 1-6.

They came out of the halftime break fast as Tom Baker netted the equalizer less than two minutes into the second half. Glenroy Chapman sent the ball in from the left side, which hit off of keeper Nathan Stockie's pads. Baker picked up the rebound and scored to get the Explorers on the board.

Kevin Pink scored the game winner just over 13 minutes later, putting a beautiful header in just over Stockie's outstretched arms for his first goal of the season and what proved to be the game winner. Jason Plumhoff was credited with the assist, as he took the corner kick to set up Pink's header.

"We were down a goal at halftime and we felt we had played pretty well," Assistant Coach Bob Wilkinson said. "We were picking up to win in the second half so we knew we would get chances, it was just a matter of finishing. It was great to see Kevin [Pink] get his first goal and it was a great ball by Jason [Plumhoff] to him."

An early own goal put the visitors up 1-0. Nahuel Medina rocketed a shot toward the goal which hit La Salle keeper John McCarthy's pads. The rebound then took an unfortunate bounce off of Chapman's foot to end up in the LIU net.

"The own goal was difficult because we thought up to that time that we had played pretty well, so there was certainly some frustration withe being down when you thought you played well," Wilkinson added. "I don't think we played our best after that, but at halftime we reorganized and got control."

The Explorers held a commanding 21-8 advantage on shots and 8-4 on corner kicks.

McCarthy picked up his fifth win of the season, making five saves in the effort. Stockie suffered the loss, stopping nine shots.

The Explorers head on the road for a three-game stretch, beginning at Villanova on Thursday (9/20) at 4 p.m.
