PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men's tennis team defeated St. Thomas Aquinas, 9-0, just hours after losing to Fordham, 9-0.
 
The Explorers (2-1) played two matches in New York on Saturday. The St. Thomas Aquinas match was re-scheduled from earlier in the season due to poor weather. Led by number one Chas Berenato, La Salle overcame the defeats from earlier in the day to sweep the Spartans.
 
Berenato moved to 2-2 on the fall season after defeating St. Thomas' number one player Stanislav Magarchenko. The junior later teamed up with Joseph LaBate to win their doubles match over Inigo Aldeko and Daniel Maysonet.
 
La Salle also received victories from De'Sean Fennell, LaBate, and Trevor Donovan. Fennell improved his record to 2-2 on the season, while LaBate moved to 4-3. Donovan improved 4-2, after two victories at the Saint Joseph's Tournament last weekend.
 
Earlier in the day, the Explorers were less successful when Fordham defeated the Explorers in the first of two matches in New York.
 
“Fordham was the strongest team we have seen this year so far” coach Ed Colfer said.
 
La Salle could not recover from a slow start against the Rams. Fordham swept the Explorers, 9-0.
 
“The team was not happy with their performance against Fordham. They were looking to get right back on the court to win, and that is what they did against St. Thomas” added assistant coach Ed Colfer, Sr.
 
Some matches in the St. Thomas Aquinas match were scored by pro sets because of time constraints.
