NEWARK, Del. – The La Salle softball team fell twice to the Delaware Blue Hens in yesterday's doubleheader at the UD Softball Stadium, 5-1 and 6-4. Sophomore
Alicia Aughton and freshman
Mary Cate Scott pitched in the first and second games, respectively, and each went the distance to notch a complete game.
Freshman
Paige Giunta recorded a pair of singles in the third and fifth innings – she scored the only run of the game for the Explorers in the fifth off an infield single by freshman
Kendra Heyer. Sophomore
Kristin Travers and freshman
Alyssa Sims each batted 1-3 on singles to center and third base, respectively.
In the second game of the afternoon, senior
Tristan Musho rebounded from a hitless first game by notching a single to left to lead off the second inning before doubling to center in the seventh. Musho scored in the second off a single up the middle by junior
Emily Moran who batted 1-2.
The Explorers trailed from the get-go but mounted a late charge in the sixth inning started by a Musho walk. Freshman
Genevieve Gaynor singled to right to advance Musho to third where she would score on the next play. Head coach
Ron Shoemaker chose to pinch hit Aughton for Moran – and it proved successful. Aughton doubled to left field scoring Travers and Gaynor but the Blue Hens managed to end the Explorers' run with a one-run advantage heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Delaware added an insurance run before La Salle's final at-bat in the top of the seventh but the Explorers couldn't produce any runs to extend or win the game.
The Explorer softball squad faces city and Atlantic 10 rival Temple for its first home game of the 2013 season at 3:00 PM tomorrow. The Explorers will enjoy a six-game home stand this weekend through Tuesday, taking on Saint Joe's for a Sunday doubleheader and UPenn for a Tuesday doubleheader.
